Triploid Grass Carp (or White Amur)
Triploid Grass Carp (also known as White Amur) are an excellent alternative to using chemicals for weed control in ponds and lakes. Triploid grass carp are genetically incapable of reproducing (each and every fish that leaves the farm is tested for triploidy). When proper numbers are stocked they will eliminate the need to use chemical herbicides for weed control. Stocking rates depend on the amount of weeds present and the size of your pond, so, be ready to answer questions about your pond (we can advise you about the number you need in your situation). You will need to restock your pond every 3-5 years, dependent upon severity of the weed problem, as the fish grow older since they are sterile. Illinois Residents: Illinois law requires that prior to stocking grass carp we, the producer, must gather information about your pond and apply for a permit from the IDNR.
